Pfeffernusse


Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon ground mace
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon anise seeds, crushed
  • 1 beaten egg
  • icing sugar

Directions

  1. Warm molasses and honey in a pot on medium-low until heated through. Add the shortening and mix well. Once it's melted, remove from heat and cool.
  2. Combine dry ingredients and mix well. Once wet ingredients are cooled, add the egg.
  3. Add wet ingredients to dry and stir until just mixed. Allow to rest for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 350.
  4. Form into 1" balls and bake for 10 minutes. Roll in icing sugar after they have cooled enough to touch.

  • Next time I would use more anise, maybe some ginger, and maybe less mace.
